How to make eggshell cake bakes
Learn how to decorate eggshells that have a fun little surprise inside… cake! Grab a grown up have a have a go yourself.
- 6 large cleaned eggs
- 65g butter
- 65g caster sugar
- 65g self-raising flour
- 1 tablespoon of milk
- A dash of vanilla extract
- Sweets to decorate the eggs
- Vegetable oil
- A zip lock / piping bag
- Aluminium foil
- A marker pen
Step 1
Tap the bottom of the eggs with the back of a tablespoon, to make a circular dent in the shell. Carefully remove the cracked pieces of shell, leaving a circular hole in the bottom of the eggs.
Pour the contents of two of the eggs into a bowl. These will be needed later.
Pour the contents of the rest of the eggs into a different bowl. These aren't needed, but don't throw them away! You could use them to make an omelette, or more cake!
Step 2
Spoon some vegetable oil into the eggshells, and shake them to ensure the inside is fully coated. Pour out any excess oil.
This will ensure that the cake doesn't stick to the eggshell, so you can easily remove the shell before eating.
Step 3
Whisk the flour, milk, sugar, the two eggs, vanilla extract and butter in a bowl until smooth and fluffy.
Pour the mix into the zip lock bag, and snip off a corner of the bag, to squeeze the mix out of.
Pipe the cake mix into the eggshells, filling them about three-quarters full, so there is room for the cake to rise in the oven.
Step 4
So that the eggs can sit securely in the holes of a baking tray, tear up some aluminium foil into pieces, and form them into 'nests' for the eggs to sit in.
Grab a grown up, and bake the eggs for 15 - 20 minutes at 180c.
Make sure to wear oven gloves when removing the tray from the oven, they will be HOT!
Allow the eggs to cool before handling. Then remove any cake mix that has spilled out of the holes in the shells.
Step 5
Now it's time to get creative! Decorate the eggshells with a marker pen and sweets! Decorate them to look like family, friends, or your favourite celeb!
Any leftover cake mix can be used as glue to stick-on the sweets. We used strawberry laces for Lindsey's hair, and chocolate sprinkles for Richie's hair.
To eat, simply crack open the shells to reveal the cake inside - yum!
