A body has been found in the search for a 72-year-old man who went missing after going sailing off the Solway Coast.

Alistair Turnbull, from Gatehouse of Fleet, was last seen at about 13:00 on Tuesday. His dinghy was later found in nearby Wigtown Bay.

Police Scotland said the body was found in the Fleet Bay area near Whithorn at about 16:40 on Thursday.

Formal identification has not yet taken place, but Mr Turnbull's family has been informed.

A major search operation along the Solway Coast involved police, coastguard and mountain rescue teams, with drones and air units.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "There do not appear to be any suspicious circumstances and a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal."
