Hindu ceremonies

Description

A look at three important ceremonies that take place in the early years of a Hindu’s life. The naming ceremony, together with the use of astrological charts, the head-shaving ceremony and the sacred thread ceremony that takes place around the age of eight are all explained.

Classroom Ideas

Students could compare and contrast these ceremonies with rites and rituals that mark growing up and initiation for other religions. What is the point of the rituals? What differences do they make? Students should consider both their religious and their social significance.
