I'm very conflicted about the Club World Cup. Part of me sees it as a ridiculous Fifa cash grab and a burnout risk for players. There's also a crossover with the Women's Euros which I don't think is right. But the other part of me is quite looking forward to getting into that football festival vibe you get with the standard World Cup and sticking a wall chart on my fridge.

As an Arsenal fan, if we're going to count the Conference League as a trophy, then Arteta has every right to count the Community Shield. We won it in 2023 by finishing second in the league. Arguably a much harder route than anything Chelsea faced in the Conference this season.

Chelsea are leading the race to sign Ipswich striker Liam Delap.

Premier League sides who have shown an interest in the England Under-21 international are now aware of his preference to the Stamford Bridge club.

Manchester United, Everton, Newcastle and Nottingham Forest were among the clubs to have shown a serious interest in Delap, who has a £30million release clause.

But Delap is understood to have chosen Chelsea as his first choice destination, with at least two of the aforementioned suitors believing the 22-year-old has picked the London club.

The move to Stamford Bridge is now expected to accelerate ahead of Chelsea formally triggering the player’s £30million release fee.

Chelsea, who lifted the Uefa Conference League trophy on Wednesday night, last week qualified for the Champions League which provides Delap with the chance to add to his solitary appearance in the competition with Manchester City in 2022.

Delap made 32 starts in the Premier League for Ipswich last season, scoring 12 goals.

Ipswich are interested in taking Chelsea striker Marc Guiu on loan as a replacement for Delap.

A £775m prize pot will be split between the 32 teams, with the tournament winners earning up to £97m.

Clubs will take home a set figure for each round:

    • Group Stages: £1.5m for a win / £800,000 for a draw
    • Round of 16: £5.8m
    • Quarter-Final: £10.1m
    • Semi-Final: £16.2m
    • Finalist: £23.2m
    • Winner: £30.0m

Clubs will also receive an award for participation - the fee depending on different sporting and commercial criteria.

European clubs will earn more for taking part than clubs from other continents. The highest ranked European clubs will receive £29.6m, and the lowest £9.9m.

  8. How did Chelsea qualify for the Club World Cup?published at 14:40 British Summer Time 29 May

In early 2023, the Fifa Council approved how qualification slots would be allocated for the first edition of the expanded Club World Cup format in 2025.

European football's governing body Uefa were awarded 12 spots, with the Champions League winners between 2021 and 2024 qualifying automatically and additional teams being determined by club rankings over a four-year period.

Chelsea qualified as winners of the Champions League in 2021 and as Real Madrid won the Champions League in 2022 and 2024, that meant that nine additional spots were allocated on club rankings.
