Tears of joy for Lewis Hamilton and his record ninth British Grand Prix victory and his first win for 945 days.

After the rubbish weather at Silverstone this weekend, that was a mega gift from the race gods.

"Lewis was in full control," his dad Anthony tells Sky Sports. "He wasn't going to let that slip for the fans".

Mercedes are celebrating back-to-back wins (although disappointment for George Russell today), so can they continue the winning streak when we head to Hungary in two weeks' time?

Lando Norris reacts to his race finish on Sky Sports: "Should we won a race today? Yes. Did we? No. I'm not going to be happy. We lost points to Max, so I'm not happy. I'm not going to be happy.

"It's where we deserve to be now, we're fighting the guys at the top."

Lando Norris has just been speaking to Sky Sports and to say the Briton is being hard on himself is an understatement. He agrees he still has things to learn as a young driver but adds he is not going to be happy "with another third place".

Race winner Lewis Hamilton spoke to Sky Sports, saying: "My heart is racing, I've had so many amazing times here in the past but when I came across that line something really released in me that I guess I've been holding onto for a very long time.

"It was the most emotional end to a win I've ever experienced, I never cry, but it hit me hard, after such a difficult 2021, just trying to continue to come back.

"But also we as a team we've had such a difficult time to try and come back and just so many thoughts and doubts in my mind along the way, to the point at times wanting to not continue."

McLaren are now within 10 points of Ferrari after the Italian team dropped more points this weekend at Silverstone.

Red Bull are 71 points ahead in the constructors' championship and Haas have added more points to their tally thanks to a sixth-placed finish for Nico Hulkenberg.

Max Verstappen is 84 points clear of second-place Lando Norris in the drivers' championship, while his Red Bull team-mate Sergio Perez has now been overtaken by Oscar Piastri for fifth spot.

Lewis Hamilton is one point behind retiree George Russell following his Silverstone triumph and over at Ferrari, Carlos Sainz is only four points off his team-mate Charles Leclerc in the hunt for third.

George Russell retired during the race after starting he pole, he told Sky Sports: "Probably about ten laps before I had to retire I saw temperature alarms come on my steering wheel and some sort of water cooling failure.

"I don't really know what to say, the car is feeling so good and I knew it was going to be a long race. I struggled a bit around the damp patches but very gutted. It was difficult out there with rain coming and going."

The Mercedes crew are getting the party started by belting out 'Sweet Caroline' in the garage. While over on Instagram, four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel has sent his message of congratulations to winner Lewis Hamilton.

Lando Norris finished in third in the McLaren, he said: “First of all congrats to Lewis, that crucial decision at the end he just did a better job on so hats off to him and Mercedes, they deserved it.

“It was tough, it was enjoyable battling these guys and these tricky conditions are on a knifes edge and you are risking a lot.

“So many things good but there were few too many let owns today and as a team I don’t think we did quite the job we should of done or good enough, but still lovely to be on the podium here in Silverstone.”

On how the race went, he added: “I don’t know I’m not making the right decisions and I blame myself today for not making some of the right decisions but I hate ending in this position and not having excuses for doing a good enough job.

“I’m still happy and I’m still going to enjoy it, and I think we still did so many things right, there are so many positives but especially here in Silverstone I would love for everything to go perfectly but it didn’t today. We will come back stronger next year and try again.”

Max Verstappen who finished second at the British Grand Prix: "I mean we just didn't have the pace today. I was slowly dropping back when it mattered in the beginning so it didn't look great at some point. We made the right calls.

"Going from the slicks to the inters and also from the inters back from the slicks. It was every time the right lap. The end call from the team to be on the hards than the softs helped me to finish second today. I'm on the podium so I am happy today.

"When it started to rain the first time, I didn't want to take risks. I tried to hang in there, not going off the track. It was quite tricky, you had to make the tyres last as long as you could. You just have to gamble, luckily it all worked out well."

Lewis Hamilton earns his ninth victory at the British Grand Prix, he said: “I can’t stop crying, it’s been since 2021 just everyday getting up to fight, to train and put my mind to the task and work as hard as I can with this amazing team.

“This is my last race here with this team so I wanted to win this so much for them because I love them and I appreciate them so much and all the hard work they’ve been putting in over the years, I’m forever grateful to everyone at this team at Mercedes and all our partners.

“And to all our incredible fans, I could see you lap by lap as I was coming round and there’s just no greater feeling than to finish at the front here.”

On it being two and a half years since his last win, he added: “It’s tough for anyone but the important thing is how you continue to get up and you’ve got to continue to dig deep even when you feeling the bottom of the barrel.

“There’s definitely been days between 2021 and here where I didn’t feel like I was good enough or if I was going to get back to where I am today but the important thing is I have great people around me continuing to me and my team. Every time I turn up and see them and put in the effort that really encouraged me to do the same thing.

“My fans when I see them around the world they have been so ive so a big thank you to everyone back at the factory and everyone here I love you guys.”

Before we read what the top three had to say, a mention for Nico Hulkenberg, Alex Albon and Yuki Tsunoda all scoring points at Silverstone today.

Also a positive day for Aston Martin with both Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso finishing inside the top 10.

Now, I saw an interview with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri this week where the two drivers said spraying champagne in your face really hurts - and Pete Bonnington has just received half a magnum right in his mush. Ouch.

Lewis Hamilton walks out onto the podium with his race engineer Pete Bonnington. Still hard to believe we'll be seeing the Briton wearing Ferrari red next season.

All of Hamilton's family are watching on as 'God Save the King' rings around Silverstone.

The British Grand Prix trophy is an absolute beauty. Hamilton also now holds the record for the most wins at a single circuit. And for it to be your home track? The stuff of dreams.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff gives a wide smile to Lewis Hamilton's mum, Carmen, who also received the tightest of hugs from the seven-time world champion.

The top three have reached the cooldown room and Lando Norris says his soft tyres were suffering from high degradation. "I degged up about 10 laps before you," he says to Hamilton.

Lewis Hamilton heads over to his father, Anthony, and hugs him for what feels like an eternity. We've said it before and we'll say it again: F1 dads, we love you.

Lando Norris has finished his post-race interview but the McLaren driver looks disappointed.
