Lando Norris said he made a "little mistake" on his final run in Q3 on Saturday but he was still happy with his P3 slot for Sunday's race.

The McLaren driver is on the hunt for his second F1 career victory after celebrating his maiden win at the Miami Grand Prix in May. While he expects the two Mercedes to be "very quick" around the Silverstone circuit, Norris added he is confident the strong progress McLaren have made will be present again today.

“Like George said, the conditions are going to be tricky. But we're there," said Norris.

"We've been very quick in the races over the last two months. It's probably been one of our strengths. It's been actually race pace over quali pace.

“This is a very different type of circuit. It's a very different layout. But it's still a strength."

Lewis Hamilton and George Russell sat down with the masses to watch England score all five penalties against Switzerland yesterday but which one of the Mercedes drivers will triumph in their Silverstone shootout this afternoon?

Polesitter Russell has the advantage but if the conditions stay unsettled over the course of the 52-lap race, could Hamilton's experience in the wet pay dividends?

Russell says he and his team-mate expect a "good fight" for victory with Lando Norris and Max Verstappen, so if the pair are able to defend their one-two from the onslaught of the McLaren and Red Bull behind, which one of them do you think will take the race win?

It is the first time three British drivers have been at the front of the grid at their home grand prix since 1962, when Jim Clark was on pole from John Surtees and Innes Ireland.

The pit lane is open and the cars are heading to the grid on the green intermediate tyre. George Russell radios Mercedes to say there is no standing water "whatsoever", but the track feels "very slippery." He then adds: "Quite strange".

Lewis Hamilton, speaking to Sky Sports on if the teams have any insight on what the weather holds: "We've got the best of British weather, it's rain this morning and now the sun is out and it's drying up. I hope it stays out for the fans, but we love you guys, thank you so much for being here today and the energy you bring.

"So so proud to be up there with George and to have three Brits in the top three, we will try and make sure we can pull through today."

On the race itself, he added: "It's going to be tough, the two guys behind us are very fast and we don't really know what their race pace is going to be like, but we are going to work as a team and hopefully see if we can try and stay ahead of them."

On the fans and keeping calm ahead of a home race, he said: "It's honestly [the fans], the energy we receive from the fans as we go round the track and at time overwhelming but ultimately I think it's just we love you and we want to deliver for you, winning here there's nothing like it."

In recent years, Lewis Hamilton has been untouchable at the British Grand Prix, securing a record eight victories (his win in 2020 was sealed on three wheels) which has led to a section of the circuit being named after him and the adoring fans indulging his crowd-surfing request following his 2019 triumph.

If he was to his team-mate George Russell today - and keep the other young pups at bay - then he would become the first Formula 1 driver to win nine times at a single circuit.

It would also end a long victory drought for the seven-time world champion which stretches all the way back to the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in 2021.

Polesitter George Russell told Sky Sports ahead of the race: “I’m feeling great, it’s so awesome being here every single year. What a day yesterday and we will go out today and try and bring it home.”

In happy spirits, he added: “Team work makes the dream work."

On the race itself, he said: “The guys behind us are really quick but we will try and work together and bring home a good result, it’s not going to be easy but hopefully the rain stays away and we can have a clean race and see what we achieve.

“We love [wet conditions] but there are so many amazing fans ing us and so we feel a bit bad for everyone soaking it up in the rain.

“From a drivers' perspective we love it, but I think we enjoy the sun a little bit more.”

“We are all full of energy right now and [the fans] give us a little bit extra.”

It’s started raining again at Silverstone - 50 mins to the start of the British Grand Prix.

George Russell was handed a slice of good luck last weekend in Austria when Lando Norris and race leader Max Verstappen took themselves out of contention for victory following their lap 64 collision, allowing the Mercedes driver to swoop by and claim his and team's first win since the Sao Paulo Grand Prix in 2022.

This time round, Russell has earned the prime spot on the grid on his own merit, so can the 26-year-old keep a cool head and up his tally of Formula 1 wins to three with a British Grand Prix victory in front of the home spectators?

In Canada, the champagne moment was almost in Russell's grasp but errors at crucial stages in the race left him third behind rivals Verstappen and Norris.

"I said after Montreal, my sort of risk-reward dial was turned up to the max and that sort of played against me at certain points," he said.

"And just ing that the race is won right at the end. It doesn't matter what happens beforehand. So yeah, that was a good learning for me."

Red Bull have taken the opportunity of Sergio Perez's error in qualifying, and 19th place on the grid, to fit a new internal combustion engine, battery and electronics control unit, all of which exceed his allowance. He will start from the pit lane.

The floor damage picked up by Max Verstappen's Red Bull following his off into the gravel at Copse in the first part of qualifying meant the three-time world champion did not pose his usual threat in the fight for pole position in Q3.

It was also another miserable day for his team-mate Sergio Perez, who spun at the same corner and ended up beached in the rough stuff, bringing out a red flag, which resulted in another Q1 knockout.

A team celebrating an early achievement at Silverstone are Haas, who roared on Nico Hulkenberg to an excellent sixth in yesterday's session. The German said he got lucky making it through Q1 but added the upgraded Haas is working well.

Over at Ferrari, Charles Leclerc was the shock elimination in Q2 as the Monegasque driver struggled with his car throughout and was given his marching orders by the Aston Martin of Lance Stroll. Leclerc will start in the same place he finished in last week's Austrian Grand Prix in P11.

If you're wanting to top up your tan at Silverstone, bad luck. Maybe try the Hungaroring in two weeks' time.

The conditions are set to changeable throughout today's track action, making the British Grand Prix a decent bet for a potential topsy-turvy outcome.

The fans have been soaked through to the bone during this weekend's action at Silverstone, so what better way for the F1 gods to repay them with not one, not two but three home drivers starting at the front of the grid for today's race.

George Russell and Lewis Hamilton delivered a front-row lock-out for Mercedes with the McLaren of Lando Norris in third. But just behind the trio of Brits comes the threat of a Dutchman, an Australian and a German, aka Max Verstapen, Oscar Piastri and Nico Hulkenberg.
